What does a “day in the life” look like for you?

Busy, unpredictable and sometimes chaotic. Most of my days start around 7am with breakfast with my daughter and son, then my wife Christine takes over and I head to the office. I usually start my day in the office by speaking with my management team about current projects, schedules, and any overnight issues. Then I check emails and voicemails and work through my daily tasks. On any given day I have conference calls, client meetings, inspections, and other offsite obligations that take up most of my day. I am usually home by 4:30pm to maximize family time.

What are the biggest health risks associated with water damage in a home, especially for children and pets?

The biggest health risk associated with water damage in a home is secondary damage for example mold. Mold growth can occur behind walls, under sinks, behind furniture, in the attic and anywhere there has been water damage or moisture. Exposure to mold can lead to health complications like Mold Biotoxin Illness also known as Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) this is a condition related to contaminated indoor air. Fortunately, many people are able to recover once mold has been remediated from their home or business.

How can parents ensure their home is safe during and after the water remediation process?

It’s important to ensure the company you have performing any work in your home is licensed and insured. It’s also very important that the company is trained by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning, Restoration, and Certification) Being trained by the IICRC can give you peace of mind that the company in your house can handle a variety of different water losses. We also recommend getting a pre- and post- test performed by a 3rd party if the situation has any mold involved.

What should moms watch for as signs of mold or mildew in their homes?

Moms should be vigilant in high-humidity areas such as a bathroom or basement. These locations are notorious to microbial growth. Other signs could be health related such as more frequent headaches, chronic sinus congestion, asthma or other respiratory issues could be a sign you have air quality issue in your home. If you do find mold, please be mindful that mold spores spread. Avoid disturbing the mold and contact a professional to do a proper inspection and testing.

What are the most common causes of water damage, and how can families prevent them?

The most common cause of water damage is plumbing related, or weather related. For plumbing it’s important to check your plumbing components frequently for any signs of wear or tear or small leaks. It’s important to keep these items maintained and replaced if necessary. Weather related items, especially in the northeast would be ice dams, broken pipes, wind related damage and flooding. Weather related items are bit trickier in the fact that weather can affect your house in so many ways. Flooding can be caused from have improper drainage, ice dams can be caused from improper insulation and ventilation (Which can also cause mold in the attic). Broken pipes can be prevented by making sure insulation is adequate and heat is at appropriate temperature in all conditioned areas. Wind related damage can be avoided by making sure your siding material, roofing material, decks, etc., are secured professionally and adequately.
